Standard Chartered-led Anchorpoint plans to offer a retail stablecoin on a public blockchain but has not set a launch date, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The plans come as HSBC launches its own Hong Kong dollar-backed token, HSBC RedCoin, for the 3.3 million users of its PayMe app.
Anchorpoint released its institutional product in August. It had said a retail version could follow as early as the end of 2026, but did not confirm this timing at a press conference.
Its chief executive, Dominic Maffei, said the company prefers to grow the market gradually and sees no benefit in rushing.
He added that offering this type of token to retail users calls for careful thought.
Under a business-to-business-to-consumer model, the venture works with partners across the value chain.
Maffei said the next milestone is to bring regulated digital money into daily payments and business use.
He also stressed the importance of public education. To support this, the company recently set up a Tokenised Money Adoption Programme for learning, research and discussion on tokenised money.
Maffei sees cross-border payments as a leading use for stablecoins. The firm has worked in the United Arab Emirates before and will share news on other payment routes as they launch.
Tokenised products, including stablecoins, are expected to be a central topic at the upcoming Hong Kong Fintech Week x StartmeupHK, which several Hong Kong government bodies are co-hosting.
