Fintech training courses, seminars and lectures, a job fair and hackathons, involving Hong Kong’s eight universities and other organisations, are on the agenda for the Fintech Education Week, which will run from30 October to 3 November, according to event details announced today by Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK).
The Fintech Education Week will follow immediately after the second annual Hong Kong Fintech Week and aims to bring the themes, know-how and excitement about Fintech to schools, university campuses and broader community in Hong Kong. It also reflects the growing prominence of Fintech in Hong Kong’s education system, which has seen several new courses announced during the past year.
In conjunction with the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Hong Kong SuperCharger is set to launch a new certified Fintech MOOC, the widely used acronym for massive open online course, during the week. The objective of this MOOC, which will run for six weeks, is to educate young talent at scale across Asia, giving them a foundation and well-rounded understanding of the key aspects of Fintech. The course will be available from January 2018.
Elsewhere, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Baptist University will hold Fintech seminars at their respective campuses. At Lingnan University on the Thursdaywill be a seminar on compliance technology for anti-money laundering.
The City University of Hong Kong, Asia Capital Markets Institute and Young Makers & ChangeMakers will host a panel discussion and interactive workshop for attendees to learn more about artificial intelligence and machine learning in FinTech, and to make their first conversational agent (or “chatbot”).
The week will also include a job fair organised by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). It will wrap up with a Fintech Hackathon, organised by HKUST, on 4 and 5 November. More information about this event will be available soon.
Many new programmes initiated recently by the local universities on Fintech reflect the growing importance and emphasis placed on this industry sector. They also reflect the need to nurture new talent to support its growth.
Besides the academics, the FinTech Association of Hong Kong (FTAHK), launched in June 2017, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority will be visiting universities to talk about recent developments in Fintech in Hong Kong. Other organisers such as Altcademy and Incu-Lab will host a wide range of events from meet-up to hackathon pitching.
In particular, FTAHK and Accelerate will host an interactive workshop with ConsenSys Academy, one of the world’s leading educational institutes for Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies, to discuss innovative education and non-traditional programmes that are designed to cultivate new skills to address the tech talent shortage in order to support the future in FinTech.
