Hang Seng Indexes Company has developed a GenAI tool for designing thematic indexes in collaboration with Cyberport and its community member INF Hong Kong.
The companies unveiled the solution at Hong Kong Fintech Week 2026. They expect it to make identifying listed companies and processing related data up to five times more efficient.
Hang Seng Indexes Company and Cyberport launched the ThemeFinder Challenge in June as the second cohort of their Index Innovation Lab. The tool emerged from this initiative.
Following a three-month recruitment process, the companies engaged with Hong Kong’s innovation and technology community. They then worked with INF Hong Kong to develop the solution.
GenAI tool covers the full index design process
The tool analyses the backgrounds and themes of listed companies, selects index constituents and recommends how they should be weighted.
It also aims to improve consistency across index operations and support data traceability.
The companies said the solution is the first financial application to use computing power from Cyberport’s AI Supercomputing Centre (AISC). A financial institution has now adopted it.
With thematic investing attracting growing market attention, Hang Seng Indexes Company expects the tool to help it respond more quickly to demand for thematic indexes.

“We will also actively explore opportunities to work with product issuers to develop products linked to relevant thematic indexes, facilitating the broader application of thematic indexes and contributing to the long-term development of Hong Kong’s financial and innovation & technology sectors,”
said Gilbert Lee, Executive Chairman of Hang Seng Indexes Company.

“The financial services industry has exceptionally high requirements for data processing, system reliability and information security,”
said Simon Chan, Chairman of Cyberport.
Chan added that the collaboration demonstrated how local technology companies could use AISC’s computing resources to develop solutions that meet enterprise-grade requirements.
Cyberport plans to continue connecting financial institutions with technology companies and supporting wider AI adoption across financial services.
The Index Innovation Lab’s first cohort produced an earlier GenAI solution with INF Hong Kong, adopted in 2025.
That tool helps calculate the free-float adjusted factor, which reflects the proportion of a company’s shares available for public trading, for indexes including the Hang Seng Index.
