Shanghai-based AI company StepFun has launched the STEPX Neo, a smartphone powered by an AI agent designed to execute cross-platform tasks.

Built to change how consumers interact with digital services, this hardware allows an AI agent to complete multi-step tasks across platforms, as reported by Pandaily.

Step AOS, a custom operating system designed for agent interaction, powers the smartphone. It uses an atomic service engine to decompose traditional application functions into micro-services.

This architecture allows the phone’s integrated personal agent, Amoo, to perform complex actions across different platforms without requiring users to open each app individually.

For fintech and payments services, this rollout could have implications by enabling agent-driven interactions across platforms.

StepFun has secured partnerships with major Chinese internet platforms including Alipay, Meituan, and JD. Users can give a single instruction for the agent to assist with multi-step tasks across supported services.

    Cloud routing and hardware integration

Basic on-device tasks rely on the Step Edge foundation model family for processing. Cloud models that scale up to 1.5 trillion parameters handle more complex operations.

Model-driven routing determines whether tasks should run locally or in the cloud.

To manage the privacy risks of agent-driven cross-app execution, a dual-domain memory system separates user data from general agent knowledge.

Security protocols include trusted execution environments for the agents and fully auditable operation logs. Users can revoke permissions on demand and reverse erroneous operations with a single click.

    A new application paradigm

StepFun Chairman Yin Qi acknowledged that the rise of agent phones could create friction with traditional app developers.

He argued that applications will evolve to serve diverse carriers, positioning agents as a parallel application paradigm rather than a replacement for apps and websites.

A second-phase launch in 100 days will introduce additional skills and platform partners. StepFun is also working with Bilibili on a co-creation programme to recruit 1,000 creators to build custom agents.

Yin Qi said future agent phones could rely more on intent-driven interfaces that complete tasks with minimal user interaction.
