WeChat Pay has integrated its service with national QR code networks in five Asian countries, simplifying cross-border WeChat Pay payments for outbound travellers.

The integration covers South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, as reported by Xinhua.

Users can now scan standard local payment QR codes directly, eliminating the need to seek out specific WeChat merchant codes.

A WeChat Pay official stated that this development represents full interoperability with local payment infrastructures, rather than a collection of individual merchant agreements.

The move allows tourists to bypass downloading local apps or exchanging currency manually.

This expansion coincides with a sustained recovery in Chinese outbound travel.

China’s National Immigration Administration recorded 185 million cross-border trips between January and March, driving demand for frictionless cross-border payment solutions.

The People’s Bank of China indicated in January that it plans to accelerate the development of a cross-border payment system in yuan this year.

China has also recently eased restrictions to allow overseas bank cards to link to domestic payment platforms, driving a sharp increase in consumption by inbound tourists using international payment methods.
