The Hong Kong Investment Corporation Limited (HKIC) and fintech platform WeLab announced a strategic partnership on 10 April 2025. The collaboration aims to accelerate AI innovation in fintech, drive financial innovation, and support fintech talent development, all to promote inclusive finance across Asia.
The HKIC’s investment and strategic partnership with WeLab will bring more market attention and capital to Asia. This move will boost Hong Kong’s competitiveness and role as a global financial and innovation hub, while also driving growth in the local economy.
WeLab is focused on expanding in the Asian market and leveraging AI’s potential. The company aims to use generative AI to create innovative AI Agents that transform financial services.
These agents will go beyond speed and cost-effectiveness, providing personalised financial solutions that adapt to customers’ specific needs and behaviours.
After the strategic partnership kick-off ceremony, the “Pioneering AI Finance ‧ Empowering Asia’s Digital Future” Summit took place. The event brought together financial industry leaders to discuss innovation in AI-driven financial services and advance digital financial development in Hong Kong and across Asia.
The ceremony was attended by Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Clara Chan, CEO of the HKIC, Simon Loong, Founder and Group CEO of WeLab, and Ranida Chamchalerm, Deputy Consul-General of Thailand in Hong Kong.
The Financial Secretary, Paul Chan, said that the strategic partnership could assist more local and regional enterprises to leverage AI and fintech, unlocking the potential of finance to support the economic development across Asia. At the same time, it will inspire more cross-sectoral innovation and support talent development for the fintech sector.
