Nuvei acquired Paywiser Japan Limited and its license from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry on 27 January 2025, allowing it to expand further into the Asia Pacific region.
This move allows Nuvei Corporation, a Canadian fintech firm, to offer direct acquiring services in Japan for every major card scheme. It also allows Nuvei to extend its direct connectivity with alternative payment methods there.
Nuvei acquired Paywiser in Japan and expanded its presence in Asia-Pacific with a new Tokyo headquarters, joining offices in China, Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore, supported by 200 payment experts. It can now offer payment solutions to help Japanese businesses grow locally and internationally while supporting global businesses entering the Japanese market.
Philip Fayer, Nuvei Chair and CEO commented,

“We’re delighted to be building on our existing presence and laying down even stronger roots in Japan, one of the preeminent eCommerce markets globally. With our modular payments technology and extensive local expertise, we’re well positioned to help businesses of all sizes accelerate their growth within this dynamic ecosystem.”
For context, the Japanese eCommerce market is poised for significant growth, with projections of an 11.6% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) from 2024 to 2032, expanding from USD $230 billion to over $650 billion.
By 2026, online buyers are expected to exceed 100 million, representing 83% of the population, while eCommerce is anticipated to account for 22% of all transactions by 2028.
Aside from acquiring Paywiser Japan, Nuvei previously launched an operational hub in China in 2023, aside from also acquiring local licenses in Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore.
Nuvei has also expanded its Omnichannel payment solution to the UK’s gaming industry, enabling gaming operators to oversee all payment channels on a singular API.
