The Chief Executive of Hong Kong has appointed Dr. Kelvin Wong Tin-yau as the next Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).
His three-year term will begin on 20 October 2024, and end on 19 October 2027.
Dr. Wong brings significant financial experience to the role, having previously served as a Non-Executive Director of the SFC and a member of the Listing Committee of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited.
He currently chairs the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC), a position he will retain until 31 December 2024, ensuring a smooth transition into his new role at the SFC.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan acknowledged Dr. Wong’s contributions to the financial services industry, noting his expertise in securities markets, corporate governance, and financial regulation.
Chan expressed confidence in Dr. Wong’s ability to lead the SFC in maintaining a fair and transparent market environment while pursuing regulatory developments to support Hong Kong’s position as a leading international financial center.
Dr. Wong will succeed Tim Lui, who is completing his six-year tenure as SFC Chairman.
Lui’s leadership was marked by close collaboration with other regulators to support government initiatives and the introduction of market reforms in partnership with the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited.
The SFC also played a key role in implementing the licensing regime for virtual asset trading platforms and in furthering the development of the Connect Schemes with Mainland China.
